Wedding
gifts can be a pain in the neck to buy. This may sound
a little harsh, but it is true! What should you get newlyweds who
are just starting out on their feet?
Well, by far, the best sort of wedding gifts to give are ones that
the couple has already registered before. For one thing, this takes
the stress of finding a great gift off of you. For another thing,
you know that the couple really wants it!
When a bride and groom register for their wedding gifts, you have
to realize that they may not keep the exact item that you give them.
Many registries allow couples to return certain items so that they
can go ahead and get the items that they truly wanted.
Perhaps, though, you do not like to be told what sort of wedding
gifts to give and which ones to not give. Perhaps you actually enjoy
shopping for wedding gifts and refuse to take a look at the registry.
This is just fine. Any gift that give will surely be appreciated
by a newlywed couple. Just realize that many couples are not in
a desperate need of more “stuff.” Couples are getting
married later in life, these days, and many of them already have
enough “stuff.”
Here are some ideas, though, as to wedding gifts that will still
be appreciated, even if they are not on the registry:
- A picture frame – after a wedding and a honeymoon, the
couple is sure to have plenty of photos that they will want displayed!
A picture frame is the perfect item to allow them to do this,
and it is also a great decoration for their new home. Or, if you
happen to have an especially good photo of the two of them, you
can give that photo along with the frame.
- Kitchen utensils – most likely the couple registered
for kitchen utensils, but there are certain ones that you can
never seem to have enough of, like measuring cups, measuring spoons,
mixing bowls, carrot peelers, etc.
- Romantic dinner basket – put together a basket full of
wonderful things for a romantic dinner. You can include wine,
chocolates, a bag of pasta, a jar of pasta sauce, candles, a romantic
cd or movie, etc.
- Gift certificates to a restaurant and/or movie -- Let the couple
continue to “date” even after they are married! No
doubt, they could use a night out at one of their favorite restaurants.
- A cooking class or another sort of class – this is something
that you can give only if you know the couple very well. Find
a fun class that they can take together. Even for newlyweds, life
is more fun if you actually do things together rather than just
sit around!
- Massage certificates – although fun, planning for a wedding
and honeymoon can be very stressful. Give the couple something
that will help them relax.
- “Hotel” – if you have a cabin or timeshare
somewhere, nothing could be more thoughtful than allowing the
new couple to spend a weekend there. When you are first married,
money can be pretty tight, and vacations can be few and far between.
These are just a few wedding gift ideas. Obviously depending on
the couple, there are probably many more wedding gift ideas that
would be just as useful or even better. Some couples, these days,
are actually asking for a donation to a favorite charity in lieu
of actually wedding gifts. This is a fabulous idea. Of course, if
you would like to donate to a charity in lieu of giving the couple
a wedding gift, make sure you think of a charity that the couple
would want to donate to themselves.
