Thank
you gifts can be given to just about anyone that you
truly want to say thanks to. Sometimes, the question is: who do
I need to give a thank you gift to, and who can I simply thank orally?
This is a quick guide to let you know whom you should give a thank
you gift and whom you can simply thank via thank you card, etc.
Whom you should give a thank you gift to:
- Teachers – your child's elementary school teachers
deserve a special thank you at at least some point during the
year.
- Long-term volunteers – if you work for a non-profit and
you have some regular volunteers that help you out for more than
a month or two, you should give them a small thank you gift as
a token of your appreciation. It is understandable if you do not
give much.
- Hair stylist – Yes, you give your hair stylist a little
“thank you tip” every time you see him or her, but
an extra little thank you gift around the holidays is still a
nice gesture. After all, he or she can drastically change your
image for better or for worse with one fell swoop of the scissors.
- Secretaries – Secretaries most definitely deserve thank
you gifts. In fact, they deserve to receive thank you gifts every
day of the year! Of course, this is unreasonable. But it is perfectly
reasonable to give him or her a thank you gift after he or she
has helped you with a very difficult project. At least recognize
your secretary on secretary's day!
- Wedding party and attendees – Show how much you appreciate
everyone coming out to celebrate your big day by giving at least
a small thank you gift. Your bridesmaids and groomsmen, however,
deserve a thank you gift on a larger scale.
Whom you should thank in another way:
- Postmen – Your postman travels through sleet and snow,
etc. through you, the least you can do is thank him or her! Of
course, generally, postmen will prefer a monetary tip over a thank
you gift.
- Newspaper boy, garbage men, etc. – You can also tip and
thank these other workers who make your life so much easier. A
dollar tip for the garbage man is often thought to be sufficient.
- Short-term volunteer – if someone comes and volunteers
for just a day, thanking them verbally multiple times throughout
the day will suffice. If the person volunteers for a few week,
a thank you card is in order.
- Also, before you decide to tip someone or to give them a thank
you gift, you may need to check and first see whether or not it
is allowed. For instance, if a news reporter wrote something great
about your business in the newspaper, it is unethical for that
newspaper to accept any sort of compensation.
Basically, a general rule of thumb is that anyone who has helped
you for a long period of time deserves a thank you gift (or a tip
if you think that would be preferred). Anyone who has helped you
for a small amount of time deserves a handwritten thank you card.
And anyone who helps you for a very short amount of time deserves
multiple thank yous and no more.
For the most part, it is up to your own judgment. Just be sure
to thank in some way those who have gone out of their way to help
you!
