Secretary's
Day was started and has been celebrated since 1952. Many people
believe that Secretary's Day was started solely to celebrate the
great work that secretaries do, but this is not entirely true.
The full truth is that Secretary's Day was started mainly by Harry
F. Klemfuss (and others) because he wanted more women to become
secretaries. By creating National Professional Secretaries Week
and National Secretary's Day, he showed women the importance
of secretaries. In this way, he encouraged women to join the work
force as secretaries.
By promoting the values and importance of secretaries, Klemfuss
ended up creating a holiday that recognizes the importance of people
who work as secretaries.
The very first Secretary's Day was held on June 4, 1952, in the
middle of National Secretaries Week, June 1-7. The celebratory week
is always the last full week in April, and the holiday is the Wednesday
during this week.
Of course, these days, the week is known as Administrative Professionals
Week, and the day is no longer known as Secretary's Day. Rather,
it is now called Administrative Professional's Day. This name
change allows the day to include a broader scope of clerical employees,
like receptionists, paralegals, and administrative assistants.
All in all, the creation of Secretary's Day was a brilliant idea.
It got more people to become secretaries (there had been a drought
of applicants, so to speak). Also, the day reaches out to thank
those who most deserve our thanks in the workforce.
Much too often, secretaries are overlooked. This is more than a
shame, because secretaries truly do so much. It is just that a lot
of the work they do is behind the scenes. It is very important to
show your appreciation for your administrative assistants.
Of course, in truth, you should not just show your appreciation
one day out of the year, or even one week out of the year. You should
be sure to express your appreciation every day! Of course, Secretary's
Day is a good excuse to give a gift.
Some gifts that you may consider giving on this holiday include
flowers, chocolates, tickets (to a sporting event, movie, restaurant,
etc.), and/or a card. It is also a good idea to take your administrative
assistant out to lunch. In the very least, you should thank him
or her a thousand times over.
So, do not forget Secretary's Day this year (aka Administrative
Professionals Day)! Remember, it will be the last Wednesday in April.
