Who
can think of a more romantic
gift idea than naming a star after your loved one!
Just imagine, somewhere up in the sky, there is a star that shares
your name, just because your significant other deemed it should
be so. Forevermore, that star will shine brightly, representing
your burning love.
Yes, it certainly sounds like a romantic gift idea, but is it really?
The problem with naming a star after your significant other is simply
this: you cannot really do it! Sure, you can pay $50 and get an
“official” certificate and a map that shows where the
star is located, but what does this really mean?
These companies that “sell” stars are not completely
legitimate. They are just banking on how much you want to come up
with romantic gift ideas. Only the International Astronomical Union
(IAU) has any right to give official names to celestial objects,
and they certainly do not do so for any commercial reasons.
The IAU names stars for scientific purposes, and it generally calls
stars by numbers, rather than “Susan B. Parkins.” It
is much easier for a scientist to deal with numbers than extravagant
names, anyhow.
So, basically, you could go out into the back yard with your significant
other, point up into the sky and say, “Baby, I am naming that
star after you.” You can save yourself $50, and still win
the heart of your loved one, as well. Just make sure that you do
not accidentally point to a planet, instead!
Of course, that being said, it is still a romantic gift idea to
buy a star for someone you love. Even if you both know that the
whole process is entirely fraudulent, the idea still remains: whenever
you look up into the sky and see that star, you will think of the
love that you feel for each other. Again, who can think of a more
romantic gift idea than that?
To make the giving of the star an even more romantic gift idea
than how the star-selling companies have it set up, you can do a
few things:
- Do not immediately announce what you have purchased.
- Rather, get away from the city (where the stars are brighter)
or go up onto your roof with a telescope.
- Write and recite a poem about stars and your loved one
- Serve a romantic dinner. Be sure to include star fruit!
- Open a bottle of champagne.
- Find the star.
- Then produce the certificate.
- Bring out the tissue box to wipe away the tears of joy.
As you can tell, giving a star as a gift is still one of the most
romantic gift ideas, even if it is merely a sham.
