Are
you looking for great retirement
gift ideas? If so, maybe I can help you out! You see,
both my husband and I have recently retired. So, while I am not
yet too terribly experienced on giving retirement gifts, I am most
definitely experienced in receiving them.
And when you combine all of the gifts that my husband and I received
for our respective retirements, you will find a lot of great retirement
gift ideas… amid a whole lot of awful ones. From this position,
I find myself to be a very good judge of retirement gift ideas.
Here are some of my favorite retirement gift ideas:
Vacation vouchers. A small group of people at the office pitched
in and bought me some vacation vouchers to a resort in a nearby
city. I absolutely love this gift! John (my husband) and I never
had much time to travel while we were working. Now, even the smallest
vacation will be an exceptional treat.
Gourmet food baskets. Yes, now that I am retired, I do have more
time to cook, but I still prefer eating over cooking! John received
both a fruit gift basket (which we ate up in a hurry) and a prime
steak gift (which we have cooked up half of and are freezing the
rest for later).
Personalized items. I love receiving personalized items! When I
receive something that has been engraved or embroidered, etc., I
know that that person put in some extra thought. The best personalized
retirement gift idea that I received was a wine bottle with a personalized
label. The label had a photo of me and John, taken at a company
picnic, and a beautiful message written beneath. John received a
wonderful mantle clock, engraved with his name, his years at the
company, and a special “thank you.”
Tickets. With the both of our retirement gifts combined, we received
tickets to a basketball game, a symphony, and the theater. You can
be sure that we will use and enjoy ever single one of these!
… and my not so favorite retirement gift ideas:
A retirement T-shirt. I am not talking about a beautiful t-shirt
that I can wear out on the golf course or elsewhere in public. Rather,
I am referring to those shirts with “witty” retirement
messages. Yes, these are rather funny and cute, but I am never going
to wear it! John, on the other hand, received a mug with a retirement
message. It is still not our favorite gift, but it does make us
smile when we drink our coffee from it in the morning.
Bobble heads.
Retirement hat.
Exploding golf balls. All right, so this gift was a little funny,
but give me real golf balls next time!
A plaque or “trophy.” Yes, the sentiment behind these
gifts is nice. And yes, they do fit into the “engraved”
category. But the clock that John received is so much more useful!
The thoughtful words can be engraved on the back of a watch, instead!
Anything else that is gimmick-y
Now that I have gone over my favorite and least favorite retirement
gift ideas, let me tell you that a letter or note is also a fine
gift. Retirees do not expect anything expensive (although, it can
be nice when a group of people go in together to buy one, “larger”
gift). Rather, we just want to know how much we were appreciated!
Such sentiment can be expressed with a bouquet of flowers, chocolate,
or a simple card.
