There
are many reasons to give organic
gift baskets. By giving an organic gift basket, you
are showing the recipients that you truly care about both them and
the environment. The question is: why buy organic?
Organic food tastes good.
Organic is better for us. Who knows what the long-term effects of
pesticides will be on us and our children? Why wait to find out?
It is good for the environment. Agriculture actually causes a lot
of pollution to rivers and streams. This pollution is caused by
chemicals, erosion, and animal waste. Organic farming can keep the
ecosystem healthier.
Small-scale organic farmers find ways to lessen agricultural impact
on the environment. They collect seeds and grow heirloom plant varieties,
preserving biodiversity. They use manure and compost to naturally
enrich the soil. They rotate crops. They do a number of things that
kept their products good, without using harsh chemicals.
Buying organic products supports the small-scale farmers and workers
who produce it
There are many different items that you can include in organic
gift baskets. Many people stick with organic gift baskets that are
full of fruit, and that is fine. If you plan to give an organic
gift basket of fruit, include items like peaches, apples, pears,
and strawberries. These are the types of fruit that stand to have
the most pesticides when not organic.
Organic bananas, on the other hand, are not worth the extra cost…
the part that has the pesticides is simply peeled away. Of course,
even though there is not as many health benefits for giving organic
bananas, there are still environmental and economic reasons.
As mentioned above, organic fruit is not the only thing that can
be given in an organic gift basket! Here are some other great options:
Organic beer. Wolaver's certified organic beers are made
with certified organic malts and hops and pure Vermont water. Even
Anheuser-Busch is testing an organic beer.
Organic wine. Check out Frey Vineyards, The Organic Wine Company,
Temple Bruer Winery, Nuova Cappelletta, and Badger Mountain Vineyard.
All of these have excellent organic wines.
Organic meat. Organic meats come from animals without added hormones,
antibiotics, drugs, and GMO feed. They are less likely to have mad
cow disease. The are usually more ethically treated and free-range.
To buy organic meat for your organic gift baskets, check out the
Meat Shop of Tacoma, Organic Valley, or Homestead Healthy Foods.
Organic soap and other health and beauty products. Not all organic
gift basket items must be edible! Organic soap and other bath products
also make excellent gifts.
Organic house cleaning supplies. A basket full of organic house
cleaning supplies is an excellent gift for a bridal shower or housewarming
party. By using organic supplies, you ensure that your home environment
is healthy, as well.
Organic t-shirts and clothing. There are even clothing items and
blankets, etc. that can be added to organic gift baskets. Choose
from organic cotton, organic hemp, and other natural clothing fabrics.
