International
Nurses Day is celebrated on the 12th of May each year and provides
nurses and midwives the chance to reflect on their calling and to
celebrate their profession. It also offers the wider public a chance
to honor nurses for their contribution to the health and wellbeing
of society.
The International Council of Nurses (ICN) began celebrating International
Nurses Day in 1965; however, it was not until 1974 that the 12th
of May was designated as the date for annual celebration. The date
was chosen to honor the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who is
often considered the mother of modern nursing.
Each year, the ICN chooses a theme to guide nursing practice and
to direct the celebrations on International Nurses Day. In 2007,
the chosen theme is “Positive Practice Environments: Quality
workplaces = quality patient care.” As part of this theme,
the ICN is emphasising the importance of adequate support, respect,
education, supplies, pay and resources for nurses.
The chosen theme for 2007 represents a number of issues which currently
challenge nursing. A particular challenge is the global shortage
of nurses, which has contributed to greater stress on the healthcare
system itself and greater personal strain on those who staff it.
Many nurses choose to leave the profession due to stress, low job
satisfaction, musculoskeletal injuries or due to workplace issues
such as poor resources or workplace violence.
The ICN is using International Nurses Day 2007 to highlight the
need to implement innovative education and health policies which
focus on improving recruitment to the nursing workforce and retention
within it. Replenishing the number of nurses within the workforce
will contribute to the formation of positive practice environments.
Another focus of International Nurses Day in 2007 is the need to
better compensate nurses for the work they do. The ICN has proposed
a series of recognition programs, by which nurses may be rewarded
for good practice. By adequately acknowledging the valuable contribution
of nurses both within their workforce and within their community,
the ICN hopes that recruitment and retention will improve.
Each year, the ICN prepares and circulates a Nurses Day kit, designed
to provide contemporary practice information to nurses, health ministries,
Governments and the public. Download your copy of the Nurses Day
Kit at http://www.icn.ch/ind2007.pdf. International Nurses Day celebrations
are planned across the globe. Local nurses unions and registration
councils organize marches, breakfasts, conferences and social events
in honor of the occasion. Each of these events will follow the theme
set by the ICN.
As a nurse, you can be proud of the contribution you and your colleagues
make. If you know a nurse or remember how a nurse has helped you
through an illness, take a moment on May 12th to reflect on the
tireless dedication and professionalism of nurses throughout the
world. |
