When
I worked for a large shipping corporation, our managers knew that
the holidays were the absolutely worst time of the year for the
people in customer service. People were upset with curriers with
more deliveries than they could handle. Some people would end up
having a lost package and in their worry become furious with the
customer service staff.
Therefore around Thanksgiving time each day of that week when we
arrived to work there would be another little gift of appreciation
on our desks. These incentive
gifts were like rewards for the hard work employees
put in when times got rough.
The same goes for the Christmas season. Although we began to receive
our incentive gifts almost three weeks before Christmas hit we would
receive another gift with a silly poem, or candy canes, or stickers,
and little notes of appreciation to go along. Our incentive gifts
were very helpful.
The incentive gifts we were given reminded us that although our
jobs could be very demanding, we worked hard, as a team, for people
who really did care. Knowing, primarily because of our incentive
gifts, that we really did have great people to work for made the
holiday challenge much easier.
But other than the holidays, we were rewarded incentive gifts just
by doing our jobs well.
For example:
If we got a compliment from a customer we were given “bucks”
for the vending machines at work as well as a certificate that included
the date, customer's name, and the compliment he or she gave.
Another example:
Often they would monitor our demeanor, knowledge, helpfulness,
and efficiency when we worked with customers. We would have several
of these monitored calls, sales etc within a given time period.
If we received high quality scores on our service, we were rewarded
candies as well as certificates that we could put up beside our
desks.
Another example:
When we were working late or overtime hours, or sometimes for no
reason at all, our managers or supervisors would walk around with
a basket of candies as little incentive gifts.
Many times, the candy was a reward for hard work as a team, and
along with their incentive gifts, our bosses would always say why
they were giving them, and mention how pleased they were with our
continued efforts as customer service representatives.
The last example:
Because of the size of our company, workers were split into several
different teams. Each team worked together to get the highest overall
quality scores for the month. One incentive was a chart on the wall
indicating how well the teams were doing, and the other was a trophy.
On a monthly basis, the team with the highest quality of all would
win the trophy, which would sit on the head supervisor's desk,
along with other, smaller incentive gifts like more candy or “bucks”
for the machines.
A plethora of ways to find incentive gifts to encourage your employees
can be found online, and they do not have to be expensive or extravagant
either. Often a smile and the gesture of gratitude is all your employee's
need for a little boost. Incentive gifts are a great idea for any
company.
