When
giving a going away gift basket, consider where the recipients are
headed to. For instance, if the recipients are headed on a month
long trek to another country, like Africa, a fruit basket is very
likely not the best going away gift basket you can give, nor is
a plant. Why? The plant will die, and the fruit will go bad while
they are away; and it makes little sense to pack these items to
take along.
If, on the other hand, the recipients are headed out on Winnebago
trek across the United States, a fruit basket may be the perfect
going away gift basket. The travelers are going to need some good
(and healthy food) for their long ride ahead of them. Also, most
campers have a fridge of sorts to keep the fruit fresh.
A gourmet food basket also makes a great going away gift basket
for anyone who is hitting the road. If you know people who are taking
a regular road trip (in a Winnebago, or even in a regular car) a
snack basket is a great idea. Include items that cannot go bad (some
of these will also make a great gift for someone who is traveling
by plane… you can not trust the airline to provide the best
food!) Make sure you do not only include junk food! Include items
like:
Wasabi peas
Sesame sticks or wild rice sticks
Barbara's All Natural Cheese Puffs or Pirates Booty
Starbucks Frappuccinos (for that added caffeine boost while on the
road)
Dried vegetables (try Just Veggies) and dried fruit
Pretzels
Chocolate licorice
Sunflower seeds
Other great ideas for going away gift baskets (especially for overseas
travel) include:
A travel alarm clock
Maps and travel books
Money belt
GPS navigational system
Phrase book
International phone card
Luggage locks
Comfortable walking shoes
Sunblock and a sun hat and/or sunglasses
When thinking of great going away gift baskets, consider which
items will be a help and which items might be a burden. For instance,
if a couple is moving across the country, you do not want to burden
them with a new lamp or a lawn sculpture. They are most likely trying
to lighten their load, and these are things that they may prefer
to pick up once they are at their new home. Similarly, do not expect
international travelers to take with them on their journey a hardback
edition of “Photos Over Germany,” etc.
When giving going away gift baskets, really make sure that you
are giving something that the recipient will truly want and appreciate.
If you cannot think of any good ideas, think small. Small items,
like a compass or a necklace, are rarely burdens and are always
appreciated.
