Finding
gifts for teens can be rather tricky… especially if you are
a parent. Depending on what age your teen is and what “stage”
he or she is in, you may find that no matter what you give, it will
not be quite good enough.
Realize that the tastes of your teen are changing. Make sure that
you are shopping for gifts for teens, and not for gifts for “older
children.” In other words, realize that whereas before you
teenage daughter collected teddy bears, now she collects makeup.
Just because she loved her teddy bear collection last year, it does
not mean that she wants to add to it this year!
In fact, the early teen years are years in which many teens will
make a great effort to grow up and to fit in. That teddy bear t-shirt
is not going to help them do either of these things. Try to avoid
any gifts that could ultimately cause embarrassment.
Of course, you do not have to try to be “hip” and “cool.”
You do not have to go out and buy one of the ultimate gifts for
teens… a new car. You do not have to give in and buy your
daughter that mid-riff-baring t-shirt. You do not have to buy your
son those pants that you think make him look like a fool. And you
do not have to buy music that would make a prostitute blush.
When it comes to gifts for teens, there is a nice middle ground.
There are plenty of gifts that you will like to give and that your
teen will love to receive. Here are some of the top gifts for teens:
Gift certificates to clothing stores. Let your teens do the hard
work for you! They know what they want better than you do. Let them
go out and find it! Of course, if you are giving a clothing gift
certificate, be sure to buy it to a store that they enjoy shopping
at now (this may not be the same store that they liked shopping
at last year!)
Other great gift certificates include ones to video game stores,
movie theaters, and music stores.
An mp3 player. You may think that you know what sort of music your
teen likes, but it might be best to simply give a device to play
it in, instead (or a gift certificate to a music store, as abovementioned).
A subscription to a magazine. Consider the interests of your teen,
and get a magazine to fit them. There are many teen-oriented magazines
out there to choose from, as well.
A book… books still make excellent gifts for teens. Give a
classic teenage book, like “Catcher in the Rye” or a
favorite of your own. Of course, when in doubt, you can still simply
give a gift certificate to a bookstore!
Tickets make excellent gifts for teens. Give tickets to a ski resort,
tickets to a sporting event, tickets to an amusement park, etc.
Savings account for college or a savings bond. You may hesitate
to give your teen cash. Instead, start him or her out with a savings
account for college (that they can add to, but not detract from)
or a savings bond that will mature in ten years.
A digital camera. Allow your teen to record his or life with accuracy…
then, twenty years from now, you can go back and say, “I told
you so.”
