 Yes,
you can buy beautiful fruit baskets online or from a catalogue,
but sometimes it is more fun to simply make one yourself. Here are
some ideas on how to make fabulous fruit baskets:
A Fruit Basket Made Entirely of Fruit
Forget the wicker basket, why not make the basket itself a true
“fruit basket?” There are different fruits that you
can use for this. If you want to make a basket with a handle, it
is best to use a watermelon because it is big enough for you to
cut in a handle. If you want to make more of a bowl that you can
“decorate,” a honeydew melon is perfect. If you want
to give each person his or her individual fruit baskets, then you
can use a hollowed orange skin.
Making one of these fruit baskets is certainly a task for adults,
not children. It requires some skill with the knife, as well. For
the watermelon basket, you can take a washable marker and draw a
line around its middle and then a thick handle going up. If you
are new to make fruit fruit baskets and you do not think that you
can safely cut out this shape, you can simply cut the watermelon
in half and use a melon ball scoop to hollow out both halves, and
then cut a slice from the one of the halves to act as the handle
for the other one (you can use toothpicks to hold it on… just
do not expect to be able use the handle to lift it up!)
With a honeydew melon fruit basket, you should cut it a little
larger than in half. Hollow it out with the melon scoop, and then
you can use your knife to cut a fancy trim along the edge, or you
can leave it plain. It is quite possible to add a design to the
honeydew melon. You can either cut it like you would a jack-o-lantern,
or you can cut a design just through the hard shell and paint food

Once you have made your fruit basket or bowl, you can fill it up
with both the melon ball scoops that you pulled from it and slices
of kiwi, strawberries, and other fruits.
A Homemade Fruit Basket
To make your own fruit basket, you need to first of all go to the
store and pick out some fruit. Consider going to a local farmer's
market for some truly delicious fruit. Or head to a store that has
organic produce.
Be sure to pick out the fruits that are in season. You can make
a traditional fruit basket with apples, oranges and bananas, or
you can go a little wild and make an exotic fruit basket with pineapple,
papaya, guava, mangoes, or other exotic fruits.
A fruit basket is best and most welcome if it has more than just
fruit in it. Add a cookbook with lots of recipes for fruit, or write
out onto recipes a few of your own favorite ones. Include a bottle
of wine or a sparkling cider.
To make an especially summery fruit basket, consider ditching the
basket and filling a picnic basket with fruit or, maybe, a cooler.
Make sure that when you fill your basket, cooler, or picnic basket
with fruit that you do not overfill it. You do not want your fruit
to get bruised in the transit.
To wrap your fruit basket, take long sheets of colored cellophane
and bring them up at top and tie them with a beautiful bow. Do not
forget to add a card!
