Fresh
fruit gifts are wonderful gifts to receive at any time
of the year. During the summer, fresh fruit gifts are wonderfully
refreshing. During the winter, they are a pleasant and fresh surprise.
If you receive fresh fruit gifts, though, there are some precautions
that you need to take to make sure that they remain completely safe.
For the most part, fruits (that we buy at the grocery store and
that we receive through the mail as gifts) are safe. In fact, fruit
is very good for us!
Nonetheless, one “rotten apple,” so to speak, may still
exist in your fresh fruit gifts or other produce, and precaution
must be taken to ensure that all the fruit you consume is completely
safe.
Here are guidelines to follow before eating your fresh fruit gifts:
Before handling your fresh fruit gifts, be sure to wash your hands
for 20 seconds or more with soap and water. You do not want to transfer
in germs and bacteria from you to the fruit.
Before eating, be sure to wash your fruit with cool running tap
water. You do not want to use soap or dish detergent. Water will
be fine.
Even melons should be washed under running water… and scrubbed
with a brush. This is because when you slice through a melon, you
can transfer bacteria from the outside to the inside with the knife.
Be sure to cut away bruised parts before eating. Sometimes, during
shipping, fresh fruit gifts can get a little bruises; and sometimes,
we do not have enough time to consume our entire fresh fruit gifts
when they are at the freshest. But do not let a little bruise bother
you! Simply cut it out and enjoy!
Be sure to use a clean knife and cutting board when cutting up your
fruit.
You can keep your fresh fruit gifts fresh, even when cut up, by
placing the serving containers on ice.
Even when on ice (and especially when not iced), you should try
to avoid keeping your cut fruit for much more than 2 hours in the
“danger zone,” which is at 40 degrees to 140 degrees
Fahrenheit.
Keep all of your cut produce in the refrigerator; and if you do
not use it within a few days, throw it out.
Do not store your cut produce in containers that have excess liquid.
Following these guidelines will help you ensure that your fresh
fruit gifts stay fresh and good.
