Book gift baskets

Book gift basketsBook gift baskets make wonderful gifts for people of all ages. Here are some of my favorite book gift basket ideas for babies, children, teenagers, and adults:

Babies and Children

  • Baby's first library – Fill a basket with great baby board books. Include favorites like, “Goodnight Moon” by Margaret Wise Brown, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle, “Hop on Pop” by Dr. Seuss, “Curious George” by H.A. Rey, and others. Make sure that you buy board books so that the baby can play with them, too. The dexterity of a baby or young child is not yet refined enough to turn paper pages. Also include a plastic coated book for the bath and a “feel me” book with different textures.
  • Baby themed book gift basket – Choose a favorite book, like “Winnie the Pooh” or “Peter Rabbit,” and base your whole basket off of that book. For instance, if you chose “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” you would want to include the book, a stuffed caterpillar, a butterfly mobile, bug pajamas, food, and other items that match the theme of the book.
  • My first library – For an older child's library, you want to include classics that that child may have well into adulthood. Include books like: “Peter Pan” by J.M. Barrie, “Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll, “Grimm's Fairy Tales,” “Sing a Song of Popcorn” by M. White et al., “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett, and other classics. Include books that you loved as a growing child or that your own children love. Include newer classics like the Harry Potter series or “A Series of Unfortunate Events.” They do not have to be books that the child can read yet, but books that he can grow into. Besides, having a parent read a book to a child creates an undeniable special bonding.

Teenagers

  • Scary book gift basket – Sometimes people just like to be scared, especially teenagers. Include books like “Blood and Chocolate” by Annette Curtis Klause, “Reef of Death” by Paul Zindel, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” by Lois Duncan, and others. You can also include a few scary movies. “I Know What You Did Last Summer” has been made into a movie, in fact. Include a bag of popcorn and any “scary” items that you can think of.
  • “Sweet Valley High” book gift basket – While “Sweet Valley High” books are not necessarily “classics,” they are most definitely much-loved books. Include one or more books along with make-up, face masks, nail polish, and a gift certificate to a clothing store!
  • Top Teen Books gift basket – find out what the current top picks of teens around the country are, and choose five or so from the list. You can find online or at your library the most popular teen books. Find ones that other teens love, as well!

Adults

  • Mystery book gift basket – Everyone likes a good mystery every now and again. Fill a basket with Sue Grafton “alphabet” murders mysteries and include some alphabet soup. For a Sherlock Holmes fan, find a few great novels and include a pipe and some good tobacco. Any fan of Dick Francis would appreciate one of his newer books and ticket to the horse track. Be creative. Perhaps you just want to choose 5 or so mystery novels by a variety of authors, current and classic.
  • Biography gift basket – Pick up a few biographies on anyone from past presidents to current movie stars to everyday people. Include a journal so that the recipient can start his or her own autobiography!
  • Travel book gift basket – If you know someone who is planning a big trip, a travel book gift basket is likely the perfect gift for him or her. Include in it some good maps and travel books of the area. You can even include a money belt or travel bag or film and other items that might be needed on the journey.
